The only time I can sleep on Noosa Main Beach legally - but what a good reason. As my gorgeous friend Carlie Wacker said this morning at 5am “I’ll never complain about a bad nights sleep again” 5 things I took away from the Vinnies Australia CEO Sleepout - Vinnies QLD amazing crew who set up this years annual fundraiser for people in need: ⚡️A hand up not a hand out ⚡️Domestic violence increased by 47% in QLD during COVID and this resulted in a massive increase of homeless women, children, men and young adults without shelter, belongings or safe housing ⚡️ Every worker has a right to come home every night ⚡️ 18.8% rent rise on the coast Rental vacancies 0.05% (hope I got those figures right but I am pretty sure that’s what our “Mayor Clare” Sultman Stewart shared) ⚡️ The recorded “average” time to get safe housing allocated in QLD is 27 months when in some cases if not many it can take 3-4 years - imagine living in a garage with your two children and that being classified as housing while you wait for a place with a front door, a key, a bathroom and a place to call home for you and your kids… men and women are equally at risk and youth on the road is increasing at alarming numbers. Dean the incredible youth coordinator who was homeless for 30 years (and taught himself to read at 36 by the way): “Homeless people feel invisible If you see someone on the streets do have a chat” - [ ] Significance - [ ] Being seen - [ ] Share a smile - [ ] Don’t look away it devalues - [ ] Human interaction As I get to go have my ritual coffee at my fav cafe I make a pledge: 1. Follow up on this cause locally and find out one thing I can do every month to support our incredible volunteers. 2. As a landlord I already keep my rents how I would like to be treated and I have no intention of exploiting the market and pushing good hard working people out of a good home 3. Never walk past someone in need without acknowledging, giving a nod, a smile or even stopping for a conversation if it feels right. And on a final note: I’m grateful that if ever my friends or I were in need I know we would rally around each other. Our role as supporters in any way is ensuring the Vinnies team can be the companions for those who don’t have anyone in their corner and are often living the most horrific time of their lives. That this organisation gets the support and acknowledgement and bequests that it needs to do the remarkable job they do. If you’re interested in more or to find out how you can help drop a comment below and we will be sending out a one page checklist to help declutter the donation and support process (even though it’s already so well laid out and so easy to see how you can help) or head to the Vinnies website and there is a raft of immediate action tips and how any support you provide works. Thanks to the incredible people who were there what a tribe ⚡️⚓️ #community #support #homelessness #significance #leadership #sunshinecoast
